Vintage in mint condition
In mint vintage condition and ready to use, this hand knotted wool Persian Hamadan rug from Iran reflects the geometric floral language that has shaped village weaving from the Hamadan region for generations. A deep midnight blue field is filled with a compact allover pattern of small stylized floral and diamond forms in red and coral, creating a layered surface where the dark ground recedes and the repeating motifs carry visual movement across the entire area rug. At the center, an ivory geometric medallion with a pointed star shape interrupts the allover pattern with clean contrast, giving the composition a defined focal point against the richly patterned field. The spandrel areas continue the surrounding motif, preserving the dense visual continuity often found in Hamadan village rugs, where pattern and texture are favored over large open areas. Hamadan rugs are traditionally hand knotted in wool on a cotton foundation using a single-weft technique, producing a slightly rustic handle along with the durability that has made vintage examples so valued for long-term use. This handmade Persian style rug offers classic character, a soft wool texture, and a timeless design suited for living rooms, bedrooms, offices, or layered traditional interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Hamedan rugs come from the ancient city of Hamedan in western Iran, one of the oldest and most productive weaving centers in the country, and they are especially respected for durability. Although they may not show the elaborate refinement of Kerman designs, the fine knotting associated with Kashan, or the wide creative range of Tabriz rugs, Hamedan pieces are considered among the most resilient Persian rugs ever woven. Their lasting strength comes from coarse, sturdy local wool, which creates a thick, deep pile made for long service. In style, Hamedan rugs are known for bold single or multiple medallions surrounded by angular tendrils, stylized motifs, and occasionally animal forms. More direct and rustic than some other Persian traditions, their designs carry a strong primitive beauty, where geometric structure and expressive decoration combine into a handmade rug with lasting visual power, practical durability, and classic oriental area rug appeal.
