Persian Kerman rugs are admired for their elegant medallion layouts, and this vintage hand knotted wool area rug reflects the refinement, balance, and detail that define that celebrated weaving tradition. A ruby red field immediately draws attention toward the central medallion, beautifully worked in navy blue, ivory, and warm peach, with delicate arabesque scrolls extending outward in the graceful Kerman style. Around the medallion, an aqua inner field is filled with a dense allover floral lattice, while the corner spandrels repeat the medallion’s geometry and secure the composition within the rectangular frame. The border system moves through multiple guard stripes before opening into a wider tan-ground main border, where scrolling botanical motifs in navy and soft blue add layered Persian character and decorative depth. Woven in Iran from hand spun wool on a wool foundation, this handmade rug has a full pile, satisfying weight, and clear pattern definition typical of quality Kerman production. Vegetable dyes create the rich color depth and subtle tonal movement that synthetic color rarely achieves. Professionally cleaned and restored, this vintage oriental area rug presents in excellent condition and is ready for everyday placement in a living room, dining room, bedroom, or refined interior setting.
Story Behind the Art: Celebrated for their refined technique and richly detailed decoration, Kerman rugs take their name from the historic city of Kerman in southeastern Iran. The city has been an important workshop weaving center since the Safavid period, from 1501 to 1732, and its rugs are admired for artistic precision. Traditional Kerman patterns often present a floral or architectural border surrounding a central medallion in the main field. Other designs include Shah Abbasi medallion-and-corner layouts, garden scenes, vase patterns, tree-of-life themes, hunting and animal imagery, allover boteh, full floral arrangements, and striped compositions. Among the most recognizable Kerman designs is the vase or boteh pattern, where vases or boteh motifs are spread throughout the rug over a ground of floral details and palmettes. Known for their fine weave, delicate drawing, and unusually broad color range, Kerman rugs often require more than a year of work, with many examples using fifteen to thirty individual colors, bringing refined luxury home décor appeal to formal interiors.
