Vintage in mint condition
Vintage and in mint condition, this hand-knotted Heriz wool runner is one of the more compositionally distinctive pieces in the Heriz tradition, arriving with its vegetable dyes fully intact and the pile in excellent shape throughout. Where most Heriz runners work an all-over geometric repeat across the field, this one centers a large elongated medallion in beige and ivory that runs nearly the full length of the piece, its stepped and serrated edges extending outward in a bold angular format that dominates the composition and pushes the deep red field to the outer edges on either side. A navy spine runs vertically through the center of the medallion connecting a red hexagonal center medallion to smaller geometric forms at the top and bottom, and the surrounding beige field within the medallion is filled with a fine diagonal stripe repeat that gives the interior a textural depth distinctly different from the flat red ground it sits against. Large red corner pieces with geometric detail in brown, orange, and gray anchor the four quadrants of the field and balance the composition across the full length of the runner. The charcoal border carries a compact geometric repeat in red, navy, and blue that frames the piece firmly on all sides, with the contrast between the dark border and the warm beige medallion. Vegetable dyes give the red and beige tones a richness that has remained consistent and well-saturated across the full length of the piece. This handmade runner rug also works as a hallway runner, entryway accent, or narrow living room rug, adding soft texture, durable construction, and timeless design to the space.
Story Behind the Art: Heriz rugs are woven in the mountainous area of northwestern Iran near Tabriz and are celebrated for bold artistry, strong structure, and outstanding durability. Made with robust local wool naturally rich in lanolin, these hand-knotted rugs have a resilient texture that allows them to serve beautifully for generations. Their signature design is the dramatic angular medallion, large, geometric, and commanding, surrounded by stylized leaves and strong motifs that radiate across the field. Deep reds, indigos, ivory, and earthy shades give Heriz rugs a powerful architectural presence. Admired for both practical strength and visual impact, they remain timeless examples of Persian village weaving and work equally well as durable floor coverings or statement pieces in refined interiors.
