Woven in Hamadan in northwestern Iran, one of the oldest continuously active rug weaving regions in the country, this hand-knotted wool carpet presents a design format that is immediately recognizable to anyone familiar with Persian tribal and village work. The entire brown field is covered in a fine geometric lattice, a tight all-over diamond and star repeat that runs wall to wall and adds to the rug a textural density that photographs rarely do full justice. Sitting at the center of that field is a star-form medallion in coral and red with blue and turquoise detail, and two matching demi-medallions emerge from the top and bottom edges in the same palette, a classic Hamadan composition that has been in use for generations because it works exceptionally well at scale. The border is a strong red carrying a repeat of geometric cartouches, blue rosettes, and gold and teal accents, outlined by navy guard stripes that sharpen the transition between field and border and give the whole rug a very clean edge. Vegetable dyes account for the richness of the brown ground and the clarity of the coral and blue tones, colors that have settled into one another over decades. Vintage and in excellent condition, it has been professionally cleaned and restored and is completely ready to use. As a Persian style area rug, it brings heritage-inspired pattern, soft wool texture, durable hand-knotted construction, and timeless design to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, or formal interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Hamedan rugs come from the ancient city of Hamedan in western Iran, one of the country’s oldest and most productive weaving centers, and they are best known for remarkable durability. They may not show the delicate refinement of Kerman patterns, the fine knotting associated with Kashan, or the wide inventive range of Tabriz, yet they are among the most hard-wearing Persian rugs ever produced. This strength comes from coarse, resilient local wool, which creates a thick, deep pile suited for years of practical use. In style, Hamedan rugs are identified by bold central or multiple medallions, angular tendrils, stylized motifs, and sometimes animal figures. Though more straightforward than some other Persian traditions, their handmade designs possess a raw, primitive strength, where geometric and stylized forms create a powerful, enduring aesthetic for traditional interiors. Their sturdy character makes them especially practical as living room rugs, dining room rugs, and hallway runners.
