Vintage in mint condition
In mint vintage condition and ready for placement, this hand knotted wool Persian Meimeh rug from Iran presents the geometric diamond lattice design associated with village weaving from the Meimeh district of Isfahan province. The deep red field is organized into a repeating diagonal grid of small diamond forms in navy and ivory, with stylized tree of life motifs, small floral heads, and abstract tribal figures filling each compartment in charcoal, ivory, teal, and sage. A single geometric medallion anchors the center of the field, formed from concentric diamond shapes in navy and ivory with a small floral rosette at its core, and its stepped outline follows the same angular design language as the surrounding lattice. The border system uses a navy ground with a repeat of stylized upright forms and small geometric filler motifs in red and ivory, framed by narrow ivory chain guard stripes along the inner and outer edges. The side borders introduce rectangular cartouches in navy and red, giving the rug a strong vertical frame on both sides. A full, dense wool pile brings depth to the red field and crispness to the geometric pattern, while vegetable dyes provide richness in the burgundy red and cool strength in the charcoal. This handmade Persian style area rug offers durable construction, traditional character, and a timeless design suited for living rooms, bedrooms, dining spaces, or layered interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Meimeh rugs come from the village of Meimeh in central Iran’s Isfahan province, a weaving center connected to the broader Isfahan tradition yet recognized for its own tribal character. Their designs are almost always organized around a repeating diamond lattice that extends across the entire field, with each compartment containing a different stylized motif, such as small floral heads, tree-of-life forms, birds, or abstract geometric figures, creating a dense and varied surface. A single angular diamond medallion often appears in the center, built from concentric stepped shapes that follow the same geometric rhythm as the surrounding lattice instead of breaking the pattern. The palette commonly favors deep reds and burgundies for the field, accented by navy, ivory, teal, and sage, giving Meimeh rugs a warm and inviting appearance. These handmade rugs are hand knotted in wool, usually on cotton foundations, with a full, plush pile that feels substantial underfoot. Older vegetable-dyed examples show exceptional depth in their reds and navies, making vintage Meimeh rugs increasingly valued by those who appreciate authentic tribal Persian weaving and timeless oriental area rug design.
