Hand-knotted in Kerman, one of Iran's most historically significant weaving cities, this wool Persian carpet draws you into a medallion composition of real intricacy with ivory and cream scrollwork unfolding across a deep coral red field in layers of curling vines, flowering branches, and fine botanical detail. The central medallion builds through several distinct registers, from a softly drawn inner cartouche outward to a full scalloped surround, with corner pieces that echo the central motifs and keep the open field from feeling sparse. Aqua, blush, green, pink, and brown accents thread through the design with a naturalism that speaks directly to the vegetable dye tradition Kerman weavers are known for (tones that carry genuine warmth rather than the flatness of synthetic color). The border holds its own, with a dense floral composition running the full perimeter on an aubergine ground, contained by narrow ivory and gold guards that give the whole piece a sense of considered proportion. Vintage and in excellent condition with no low pile or staining, it has been professionally cleaned and restored and is completely ready to use. As a Persian style area rug, it brings heritage-inspired pattern, soft wool texture, durable hand-knotted construction, and timeless design to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, or formal interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Kerman rugs, celebrated for technical excellence and elaborate design, originated in the city of Kerman in southeastern Iran, a historic center of workshop weaving since the Safavid period from 1501 to 1732. A typical Kerman composition often includes a floral or architectural theme in the main border, paired with a central medallion in the field. Other patterns include Shah Abbasi medallion-and-corner layouts, garden scenes, vase designs, tree-of-life imagery, hunting and animal motifs, all-over boteh, all-over floral patterns, and stripes. The most recognized Kerman design is the vase or boteh pattern, where vases or boteh motifs repeat across the rug against floral elements and palmettes. These Persian style rugs are admired for fine weaving, delicate drawing, and an unusually broad color range. A single Kerman rug can take more than a year to complete and may include 15 to 30 colors, creating a refined handmade area rug with exceptional decorative richness. The result is an elegant oriental area rug with museum-like decorative character.
