Hand-knotted in the Kurdish Bidjar tradition, this wool runner pairs one of the most technically demanding weave structures in Persian rug making with the herati pattern, an all-over repeat of small diamond lattice forms that covers the entire coral red field from edge to edge in navy, ivory, and aqua without interruption or a central medallion to break the repeat. The herati format is one of the oldest continuous design traditions in Persian weaving and works particularly well in the elongated runner format because the repeat holds visual consistency across the full length without requiring any compositional anchor. What sets this piece apart within that format is the ivory border, which carries a pictorial repeat of stylized animals, figures, and geometric forms in coral, blue, and brown, a folk narrative border that adds real character and contrast against the more structured geometry of the field. Bidjar wool is woven with an exceptionally dense, compacted pile that makes these rugs among the most hardwearing of all hand-knotted Persian rugs, and this one carries that construction with vegetable dyes that have kept the coral and navy tones rich and even across the whole piece. Vintage and in excellent condition with no low pile, staining, or damage, it has been professionally cleaned and restored and is completely ready to use. This handmade runner rug also works as a hallway runner, entryway accent, or narrow living room rug, adding soft texture, durable construction, and timeless design to the space.
Story Behind the Art: Kurdish Bidjar Herati rugs are Bidjar weavings that feature the classic Herati pattern, one of the most admired and widely used motifs in Persian rug-making. The design typically shows a central rosette set within a diamond, surrounded by curving leaves and repeated across the field in a refined allover arrangement. In a Bidjar rug, this elegant pattern gains added strength because of the famously dense, tightly packed construction, giving the surface a bold, almost sculptural quality. Colors usually lean toward deep reds and indigos, often highlighted with ivory or soft green accents for a rich jewel-toned effect. The union of Herati elegance with Bidjar durability makes these rugs especially desirable, refined enough for formal rooms and strong enough to last for generations.
