Vintage and in excellent condition with no low pile, staining, or damage, this hand-knotted Kurdish Bidjar wool runner has been professionally cleaned and restored and is completely ready to use, making it a straightforward choice for anyone who wants a genuine antique Persian piece without the restoration work that so often comes with the territory. Woven in the Bidjar tradition of northwestern Iran, the runner works a delicate all-over scatter of tiny boteh forms in navy and black across a deep coral red field. The scale of the repeat is notably small for a Bidjar, which gives the field an understated quality that contrasts with the more geometric boldness typical of the tradition. The border system is multi-layered, with an ivory main border carrying a geometric repeat in coral, aqua, and black, and a series of narrow aqua and black guard stripes that step inward toward the field in a format characteristic of Kurdish weaving from this region. Bidjar construction is known for producing some of the densest and most durable pile of any hand-knotted Persian rug, and the vegetable dyes used here have kept the coral and navy tones consistent and well-saturated across the full length of the piece. This handmade runner rug also works as a hallway runner, entryway accent, or narrow living room rug, adding soft texture, durable construction, and timeless design to the space.
Story Behind the Art: Kurdish Bidjar Herati rugs are Bidjar weavings that feature the classic Herati pattern, one of the most admired and widely used motifs in Persian rug-making. The design typically shows a central rosette set within a diamond, surrounded by curving leaves and repeated across the field in a refined allover arrangement. In a Bidjar rug, this elegant pattern gains added strength because of the famously dense, tightly packed construction, giving the surface a bold, almost sculptural quality. Colors usually lean toward deep reds and indigos, often highlighted with ivory or soft green accents for a rich jewel-toned effect. The union of Herati elegance with Bidjar durability makes these rugs especially desirable, refined enough for formal rooms and strong enough to last for generations.
