Originating from the Hamadan weaving region of northwestern Iran, this hand-knotted wool runner is built around the boteh, one of the oldest and most widely recognized motifs in Persian textile history and the same teardrop form that would later become known in the West as the paisley. Here the boteh repeats in a dense diagonal lattice across a deep navy field, each unit filled with coral, red, and ivory detail and set tightly enough against the dark ground that the overall effect is bold and graphic without losing the intricacy of the individual motif. The repetition is remarkably even across the full length of the runner, which speaks to the skill involved in maintaining pattern consistency over an elongated format by hand. A red border carries its own smaller geometric repeat in pink, ivory, and aqua, and ivory guard stripes on either side frame it cleanly before the fringe begins. Vegetable dyes give the navy its depth and the coral tones their warmth, and after decades of aging those colors have only grown richer and more settled. Vintage and in excellent condition, it has been professionally cleaned and restored and is completely ready to use. This handmade runner rug also works as a hallway runner, entryway accent, or narrow living room rug, adding soft texture, durable construction, and timeless design to the space.
Story Behind the Art: Boteh, the Farsi term often connected with paisley, is one of the most widely recognized motifs in rug design. This pear-shaped figure appears in many versions, from richly detailed and elaborate renderings to simplified geometric forms. It is easily identified by its paisley or teardrop-like silhouette, often shown with a curved extension and floral arch, and is commonly linked to the idea of the garden of paradise. Across different interpretations, the boteh has been associated with fertility, pine cones, the cypress tree, leaves, flame, and other symbols of growth, life, and renewal. As a decorative motif, it brings historic meaning and graceful movement to handmade rugs, oriental area rugs, and Persian style rug patterns.
