Hand-knotted in the Hamadan region of northwestern Iran, this wool carpet uses a triple medallion format that is straightforward in its design with three large diamond medallions stacked vertically down a red field, each outlined in charcoal and filled with a geometric cross motif in gold, brown, and ivory. The field itself is covered in a dense diagonal repeat of small leaf forms in red and dark brown that runs across the entire ground, giving the rug texture and visual depth behind the medallions. The border carries a row of geometric pinwheel rosettes in red, navy, and gold, which fits the tribal character of Hamadan work without overcomplicating the edges. The color palette is warm and grounded, built primarily around red and charcoal with gold and brown adding detail throughout. Vegetable dyes give these tones their richness, and the colors have aged consistently across the piece. Vintage and in excellent condition with no low pile, staining, or damage, it has been professionally cleaned and restored and is completely ready to use. As a Persian style area rug, it brings heritage-inspired pattern, soft wool texture, durable hand-knotted construction, and timeless design to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, or formal interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Hamedan rugs come from the ancient city of Hamedan in western Iran, one of the country’s oldest and most productive weaving centers, and they are best known for remarkable durability. They may not show the delicate refinement of Kerman patterns, the fine knotting associated with Kashan, or the wide inventive range of Tabriz, yet they are among the most hard-wearing Persian rugs ever produced. This strength comes from coarse, resilient local wool, which creates a thick, deep pile suited for years of practical use. In style, Hamedan rugs are identified by bold central or multiple medallions, angular tendrils, stylized motifs, and sometimes animal figures. Though more straightforward than some other Persian traditions, their handmade designs possess a raw, primitive strength, where geometric and stylized forms create a powerful, enduring aesthetic for traditional interiors. Their sturdy character makes them especially practical as living room rugs, dining room rugs, and hallway runners.
