Vintage in mint condition
Vintage and in mint condition, this hand-knotted Kurdish Bidjar wool runner presents one of the cleanest examples of the herati all-over format available in a genuine vintage Persian piece, with its vegetable dyes fully intact and the pile in exceptional shape throughout. Woven in the Bidjar tradition of northwestern Iran, the runner covers a deep red field with a continuous small-scale repeat of diamond herati forms in navy, ivory, blush, and sage that runs edge to edge across the full length without interruption, creating a rich, densely patterned surface that reads as almost jewel-like from a distance. The repeat is remarkably even and consistent across such an extended format, which speaks directly to the skill and discipline of Bidjar weavers working within a tradition known for its technical standards as much as its design vocabulary. The ivory border carries a pictorial repeat of stylized figures, animals, and geometric forms in navy, red, and sage that wraps the full perimeter and adds a folk narrative quality to the piece. Bidjar construction produces one of the densest and most compacted pile structures of any Persian hand-knotted rug, making these runners particularly well suited to high-traffic use, and the vegetable dyes here have kept the red and navy tones rich and consistent across the entire piece. This handmade runner rug also works as a hallway runner, entryway accent, or narrow living room rug, adding soft texture, durable construction, and timeless design to the space.
Story Behind the Art: Kurdish Bidjar Herati rugs are Bidjar weavings that feature the classic Herati pattern, one of the most admired and widely used motifs in Persian rug-making. The design typically shows a central rosette set within a diamond, surrounded by curving leaves and repeated across the field in a refined allover arrangement. In a Bidjar rug, this elegant pattern gains added strength because of the famously dense, tightly packed construction, giving the surface a bold, almost sculptural quality. Colors usually lean toward deep reds and indigos, often highlighted with ivory or soft green accents for a rich jewel-toned effect. The union of Herati elegance with Bidjar durability makes these rugs especially desirable, refined enough for formal rooms and strong enough to last for generations.
