Vintage in mint condition
Vintage and in mint condition, this hand-knotted Kashmar wool carpet from northeastern Iran arrives with its vegetable dyes fully intact and no restoration needed, presenting a textbook example of the all-over floral arabesque format that Kashmar weavers have refined over generations. The deep red field is covered edge to edge in a continuous network of curling ivory vines, scrolling arabesques, and individual floral blooms in aqua, orange, and blue that flows across the entire ground without a central medallion to interrupt it, creating a composition where the eye moves freely through the pattern in every direction. The drawing is fluid and well-proportioned across the full field, with the ivory vine structure providing enough visual organization to hold the repeat together while the secondary floral forms in aqua and orange add color variation and depth throughout. The wide midnight blue border carries its own continuous arabesque and floral repeat in ivory, red, and aqua, outlined by a periwinkle blue guard stripe on the inner edge that creates a clean visual separation between the field and border and pulls the aqua tones from the field into the perimeter of the piece. Vegetable dyes give the red field and midnight blue border a warmth and depth that has held evenly and consistently across the full carpet. As a Persian style area rug, it brings heritage-inspired pattern, soft wool texture, durable hand-knotted construction, and timeless design to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, or formal interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Kashmar rugs originate in the town of Kashmar in the Khorasan province of northeastern Iran, a region with a long weaving history that expanded significantly during the 20th century to answer commercial demand. These large decorative rugs are known for elaborate floral medallion layouts, usually centered by a prominent medallion surrounded by dense floral sprays, palmettes, and scrolling vines that spread gracefully across the field. Their colors are often rich and traditional, although softer and more muted palettes are also found. The wool pile is full, comfortable, and pleasant underfoot, and the rugs are often produced in larger room sizes. Kashmar rugs are generally considered well made, rooted in classical Persian design, and appealing for interiors that want traditional beauty without the premium cost of more famous weaving centers.
