Vintage and in mint condition, this hand-knotted Tabriz wool carpet belongs to the vase rug tradition, one of the most celebrated design formats in Persian weaving history, where large stylized vases anchor the composition at the top and bottom of the field and send flowering branches and botanical forms cascading across the entire red ground. The field is densely populated with an all-over arrangement of floral and foliate forms in navy, peach, aqua, lime, ivory, and pink, with a large central medallion in deep aubergine and gold drawing the eye to the middle of the composition before the eye continues outward through the surrounding pattern. The vase motifs themselves are drawn with the fluid, curvilinear draftsmanship that Tabriz is known for, and the botanical forms radiating from them fill the red field with a richness and variety of detail that rewards sustained attention.
