Vintage in mint condition
Vintage and in mint condition, this hand-knotted Bakshaish wool carpet from the Heriz region of northwestern Iran arrives with its vegetable dyes fully intact and no restoration needed. The design places three large diamond medallions in deep rust red stacked vertically down a charcoal and aubergine field, each outlined in gold with serrated edges and a smaller hexagonal form at the center carrying stylized botanical detail in rust and gold. The deep field gives the rust and gold tones a warmth and intensity that carries well across a room, and scattered geometric filler motifs in rose, sage, and gold fill the open areas between medallions in the spontaneous village drawing style that defines Bakshaish work. A gold and ivory border with a scrolling floral repeat in rust and red wraps the full perimeter, completing the composition cleanly at the edges. Vegetable dyes give the charcoal, rust, and gold tones a depth and consistency that has held evenly across the full piece. As a Persian style area rug, it brings heritage-inspired pattern, soft wool texture, durable hand-knotted construction, and timeless design to living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, or formal interiors.
Story Behind the Art: Bakshaish rugs come from the remote village of Bakshaish in the Heriz region of northwestern Iran, where tribal and semi-nomadic weavers began producing distinctive rugs from the mid-19th century onward. They are considered among the most artistically individual Persian rugs, known for large-scale medallion designs and graceful curvilinear forms. The drawing is often bold, open, and slightly irregular, which enhances their handmade charm and one-of-a-kind character. Their colors are usually muted and earthy, often showing attractive abrash, where naturally dyed wool shifts subtly across the field. This gentle variation adds depth, warmth, and authenticity, making Bakshaish rugs expressive traditional area rugs for interiors that appreciate artistry and historical texture.
