Vintage in mint condition
In mint vintage condition and ready for use, this hand knotted wool Persian Bakhtiari area rug from Iran opens with a midnight blue field covered in a dense floral and vine pattern in rust, red, ivory, and brown, with motifs packed across the ground so completely that the surface reads as a richly woven whole rather than a collection of separate elements. At the center, a large lobed medallion in alternating layers of navy and rust red carries stylized floral forms in ivory, teal, and orange, while a pointed ivory inner medallion draws attention to a fine star rosette at its core. The surrounding field continues its floral lattice right up to the medallion’s edge, maintaining the layered, full-pattern character that defines the composition. An ivory main border presents a bold procession of floral heads and scrolling vines in rust, navy, and brown, its lighter ground creating a clear visual break from the darker field, while narrow navy and red guard stripes complete the frame. The medium-to-full wool pile sits evenly across the rug, and vegetable dyes give the rust tones their warmth and the midnight blue its depth. With consistent pile and strong color throughout, this handmade oriental area rug offers traditional craftsmanship, soft texture, durable construction, and timeless appeal for refined living spaces.
Story Behind the Art: Bakhtiari rugs originate in the Bakhtiari region of western Iran and are admired for their bold patterning, durable wool construction, and strong decorative personality. Their designs are usually geometric and confident, often built around repeating garden-panel layouts or large floral medallion compositions placed on deep red, navy, or ivory grounds. The field is typically filled with stylized flowers, leaves, palmettes, vines, and dense botanical detail. The garden-panel format, where the rug is divided into compartments containing different flowering trees or plants, is especially connected with Bakhtiari weaving and gives these rugs a distinctive pictorial quality. Hand knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with the Persian knot, Bakhtiari rugs often have a medium to full pile and a solid structure that makes vintage examples especially durable. In older pieces, vegetable dyes create warmth, depth, and natural variation, with reds and blues retaining a richness that reflects the quality of materials available to regional weavers.
